EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an identification tag from the American Civil War, belonging to C. P. Moore who enlisted at the young age of 18 and tragically succumbed to disease in 1864. The gilt brass disk, featuring a hole for attachment at the top, bears striking historical significance. On its obverse side, we find a profile bust of General George B. McClellan along with the inscription "MAJ. GEN. G. B. McCLELLAN / PENINSULAR CAMPAIGN" encircling it. The reverse side of this precious artifact reveals even more details about Moore's service and identity as it proudly displays "CO. 1/ 5th U. S. COLORED. / VOLS" die-stamped at its center while encompassed by the words "C. P MORE. / MASHLAND. STOCK CO. O. O" around its perimeter. Dating back to the 19th century, this African American soldier's ID tag represents not only his personal story but also highlights significant aspects of black history during that era. The gold brass alloy used in its construction adds a touch of elegance to this piece which now resides within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), part of the esteemed Smithsonian Institution. As we reflect upon this object, we are reminded not only of Moore's sacrifice but also gain insight into America's cultural heritage and military history during one of its most tumultuous times - a period marked by warfare and struggle for equality within our nation's armed forces.
