EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration by Vasilii Osipov, created in 1813, showcases a Japanese sentry vessel and fortress as depicted in the atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences. The atlas, which includes 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the Adam Johann von Krusenstern expedition, is a significant publication from tsarist Russia. In 1803-06, Captain I.F. Kruzenshtern led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, and this atlas documents his route and the various sights and encounters during the voyage. The illustration presents a serene yet guarded scene of a Japanese fortress nestled atop a hill, with sentry vessels anchored in the calm waters below. The intricate details of the fortress walls, the ornate fan held by one of the figures, and the traditional Japanese clothing worn by the men, all contribute to the rich cultural heritage of the image. This illustration is a testament to the meeting of frontiers and the exploration of new lands and peoples during the 19th century.
