Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, 1856. In about 1840, ...In the young Princess Mary - then about sixteen years of age - the Cesarewitch [present Emperor Alexander II] saw the ideal of a wife, and he became enamoured of her at once. Within a year they were married, the Princess changing her original names, Maximilienne Wilhelmina Augusta Sophia Maria, into the Marie Alexandrowna, by which she is known to the Russian people... Her elder brother, the Duke of Hesse, has recently used his utmost efforts to second his sister in her great aim - that of arriving at a restoration of peace. Although at war with the Russians, we have learned to respect their many great qualities; and it is a still more softening influence over the asperities engendered by strife to know that the illustrious lady who shares the Russian throne is herself an apostle of peace, civilisation, and progress'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image portrays Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, Marie Alexandrovna (born Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine), in the year 1856. At the tender age of sixteen, Marie caught the eye of the future Emperor Alexander II, who was immediately smitten. Their union was sealed in marriage just a year later, with Marie adopting the name Marie Alexandrovna in her new role as Russian empress. Her elder brother, the Duke of Hesse, had long supported Marie's aspirations for peace between their respective countries, despite the ongoing war between Russia and Hesse. The Duke's efforts, combined with Marie's own dedication to peace, civilisation, and progress, served to soften the harsh realities of war and inspire hope for a brighter future. Marie's influence extended beyond her role as a peacemaker. She was a champion of education, founding schools and promoting literacy among the Russian people. Her love for the arts led to the establishment of the Imperial Theatres, which showcased both Russian and European productions. And her commitment to social welfare resulted in the creation of numerous charities and institutions to aid the less fortunate. This photograph captures the grace and elegance of a woman who, despite the political tensions of her time, remained steadfast in her pursuit of peace and progress. Marie Alexandrovna's legacy continues to inspire and influence Russian culture and history to this day.
