Inauguration of the National Rifle Match - the Queen receiving the address of the Nationa... 1860. Creator: Unknown

Inauguration of the National Rifle Match - the Queen receiving the address of the National Rifle Association, 1860. Shooting competition on Wimbledon Common in London, ...in the presence of several thousand spectators. The Queen attended in state; her Majesty being accompanied by the Prince Consort, the Prince of Wales, Prince Arthur, Princesses Alice and Helena, and the Dukes of Cambridge and Saxe-Gotha. Shortly after the arrival of the Royal party, Mr. Sidney Herbert, accompanied by Lord Elcho, the Hon. Arthur Kinnaird, and other members of the council of the Rifle Association, presented an address to her Majesty explanatory of the objects for which the match was held...The Royal party returned to the pavilion, where they remained for a considerable time. At last the carriages were again ordered, and the Queen visited the butts in succession, the Royal presence being the signal for the practice to commence. The sharp report and the sudden "ping" was then heard in quick succession, and was continued until eight o'clock, when it terminated for the day, a salute of artillery indicating both the commencement and the finish to the outer world'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in British history: the Inauguration of the National Rifle Match in 1860, with Queen Victoria in attendance. The scene unfolds on Wimbledon Common in London, where several thousand spectators gathered to witness the event. The Queen, accompanied by her husband Prince Albert, their eldest son Prince Edward, and their daughters Princesses Alice and Helena, as well as the Dukes of Cambridge and Saxe-Gotha, arrived in grand procession. Upon their arrival, representatives of the National Rifle Association, including Mr. Sidney Herbert and Lord Elcho, presented an address to Her Majesty, explaining the purposes of the match. After receiving the address, the Royal party retreated to the pavilion, marking the beginning of the practice sessions. The sharp reports of the rifles and the distinct "ping" of the targets echoed through the air as the competition commenced. The Queen watched intently from the pavilion until eight o'clock, when the practice sessions came to a close, signaled by a salute of artillery. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the grandeur of the occasion and the excitement of the National Rifle Match in its early days.
