Inclined planes for use on canals, 1796
Inclined planes for use on canals, 1796. Top: double inclined plane. Middle: upper works of a single inclined plane. Bottom: upper works of a medium inclined plane powered by a water wheel. The inclined plane could be used to transfer vessels, in this case tub boats, often of iron, from one level of a canal to another without the expense of a flight of locks which could make the building of a canal uneconomic. Plate based on engravings in A Treatise on the Improvement of Canal Navigation by Robert Fulton. (London, 1796)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 18th century, a time of great innovation and progress. In this image, we are presented with three different inclined planes designed for use on canals in 1796. At the top, we see a double inclined plane, showcasing the ingenuity of engineering during this period. The middle section provides us with a glimpse into the upper works of a single inclined plane, while at the bottom, an impressive medium inclined plane powered by a water wheel catches our attention. These inclined planes were essential in transferring vessels, particularly tub boats made of iron, from one level of a canal to another without relying on costly flight locks. This technological advancement revolutionized water transport during the industrial revolution. The presence of animals is also notable in this print. A horse stands beside one of these innovative structures as it assists in pulling boats along these inclines. It serves as a reminder that even amidst technological advancements, humans still relied heavily on animal power. Robert Fulton's engravings from his book "A Treatise on the Improvement of Canal Navigation" provide valuable insights into transportation methods utilized during this era. This particular print captures both human ingenuity and nature's role in propelling progress forward. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured through monochrome imagery, we are reminded not only of Robert Fulton's contributions but also how far humanity has come since those early days when water power was harnessed to reshape our world.
