Indian rebel, Zahoor-ool-Hoosein, recently captured, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Indian rebel, Zahoor-ool-Hoosein, recently captured, 1862. Engraving from a photograph '...taken at Poona by Lieutenant-Colonel I. D. Stewart, of the Bombay [ie British Indian] army...of one of the leaders in the Indian mutiny of 1857...This rebel, who has so long evaded justice, has recently been captured in the Bombay Presidency, and is about to be forwarded to Oude for trial...The Police Commissioner N. D. in reporting this important capture justly notes it "as a remarkable instance of the retribution which is slowly but surely overtaking all the principal criminals and leaders of the rebellion. The home and family of Zahoor-ool-Hoosein are in the north-west of Hindostan, and he attempted to evade pursuit by abandoning both for the extreme south-west corner of the Nizam's dominions in the Deccan. He was there in the enjoyment of place and power when apprehended on information obtained in the distant province of Guzerat, and by means of this information an offender is brought to justice for crimes committed five years ago in the province of Oude, at the other extremity of India".' From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the moment Indian rebel Zahoor-ool-Hoosein was finally captured in 1862, after evading justice for years following his involvement in the Indian mutiny of 1857. The engraving is based on a photograph taken by Lieutenant-Colonel I. D. Stewart of the Bombay army, showing Zahoor-ool-Hoosein as he is about to be forwarded to Oude for trial. Zahoor-ool-Hoosein's capture was described as a remarkable instance of retribution by Police Commissioner N. D., highlighting how slowly but surely all principal criminals and leaders of the rebellion were being brought to justice. Despite attempting to evade pursuit by fleeing from his home and family in north-west Hindostan to the south-west corner of the Nizam's dominions in Deccan, he was apprehended thanks to information obtained from Guzerat province. The image not only serves as a historical record of this significant event but also symbolizes the ongoing efforts to hold accountable those responsible for crimes committed during turbulent times in India. It stands as a reminder that justice may be delayed, but it will eventually prevail against even the most elusive offenders like Zahoor-ool-Hoosein.
