On Thursday week (January 24), the solemn inauguration of Dr. Hinds, the sixty-fourth Bishop of the diocese, and the thirty-third since the Reformation, took place at the Cathedral in Norwich. The ceremony excited considerable interest; St. Peter's Church bells rang joyously until morning, and the attendance of the clergy was very numerous...The Hon. and Very Rev. the Dean, on behalf of the clergy, read an address, congratulating his Lordship on his arrival upon the scene of his episcopal labours; and, after referring to the late excellent Bishop, wishing his successor long and happily to preside over the diocese'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the Installation of the Bishop of Norwich in the hallowed halls of Norwich Cathedral. The solemn occasion marked the arrival of Dr. Samuel Hinds, the sixty-fourth Bishop since the Reformation, and the thirty-third since the establishment of the diocese. The event elicited great interest within the community, with St. Peter's Church bells ringing joyously until morning and an impressive attendance of clergy. The procession in the Nave of the Cathedral is depicted in this image, with the Hon. and Very Rev. the Dean delivering an address on behalf of the clergy, wishing the new Bishop long and successful tenure over the diocese. The Gothic and Romanesque architecture of the Cathedral serves as a fitting backdrop to the black-robed figures of the clergy and choirboys, who line the aisles, adding a sense of tradition and history to the scene. The photograph, though unsigned, is a testament to the rich heritage of the Church in Britain during the Victorian era. The image is a poignant reminder of the importance of religious and community gatherings, as well as the enduring influence of the old boys network and the clergyman's role in society during that time.
