EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the late 19th century, offering a glimpse into the bustling interior of Thomas Firth & Sons Norfolk Works in Sheffield. The image showcases twelve dedicated men, each stationed at their work desks facing large windows, engaged in the intricate art of hand-cutting files from crucible steel blanks. The attention to detail is remarkable as we observe the workers meticulously crafting these essential tools for various industries. Louvred shutters on the outside of the building are visible, serving to regulate and harness natural light, an invaluable resource for this metalworking trade. Founded around 1840 by Mark Firth and his father Thomas, with Thomas Firth Junior joining them in 1842, this company quickly rose to prominence as leading iron and steel producers. Their products ranged from guns to large forged steel items like crankshafts for steam engines used in ocean liners. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also embodies the spirit of Victorian-era manufacturing and craftsmanship. It transports us back to an era when hard work and dedication were paramount values within England's industrial landscape. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene filled with focused individuals immersed in their tasks, we can't help but appreciate their contribution to shaping South Yorkshire's rich history as a hub for metalworking excellence.
