The International Cattle Show at Poissy, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The International Cattle Show at Poissy, [northern France], 1862. At present the town is merely remarkable for its cattle market, which is held every Thursday, and furnishes, along with Sceaux, nearly all the meat supplies to Paris. The days of both are, however, numbered, and they will be shortly removed nearer the capital, to a place called La Villette, which will be far more convenient for the butchers and more favourable to the popularity of future International Cattle Shows...Our English exhibitors were much alarmed at the commencement of the meeting by a rumour which got abroad to the effect that all prize animals were to be slaughtered at Poissy, and subjected to a committee of taste, presided over by a professional cook. This was a terrible blow to the hopes of those who cherished visions of priority at Bingley and the new Metropolitan Hall; but, though a veritable regulation, it was not insisted upon'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history at The International Cattle Show held in Poissy, northern France, in 1862. With an unknown creator behind the lens, this image provides a glimpse into the bustling cattle market that once defined the town.
Poissy's weekly cattle market was renowned for supplying meat to Paris alongside Sceaux. However, change was on the horizon as plans were underway to relocate both markets closer to the capital at La Villette. This move promised greater convenience for butchers and enhanced popularity for future International Cattle Shows.
The atmosphere surrounding this particular event was tinged with anxiety among English exhibitors. Rumors circulated that all prize animals would be slaughtered at Poissy and subjected to a committee of taste led by a professional cook. Such news struck fear into those who had dreams of securing priority positions at Bingley and the new Metropolitan Hall exhibitions.
Fortunately, while this regulation did exist, it was not enforced during this gathering. Nonetheless, it serves as a testament to the dedication and passion exhibited by these exhibitors who sought recognition for their prized livestock.
Preserved through time by "Illustrated London News" in 1862, this print allows us to witness an important chapter in agricultural history unfold before our eyes. It is a reminder of how traditions evolve over time and how even seemingly mundane events like cattle shows can shape industries and communities.
