The International Exhibition: cups made of ostrich eggs, in the Algerian Court, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: cups made of ostrich eggs, in the Algerian Court, 1862. The cups which we engrave may be classed amongst the curious works which wo have rarely the opportunity of seeing. Formed of ostrich-eggs, they are beautiful in shape; and, while we cannot say much in favour of the ornament which is carved on the shell, the filigree mountings in gold and silver are very beautiful. Quaint in appearance and unique in aspect, these cups appear in the exhibition as objects of interest, in the secluded south-east comer of the French Court'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken during the International Exhibition of 1862, showcases a collection of cups made from ostrich eggs, on display in the Algerian Court. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, highlights the unique beauty of these cups, with their organic, egg-shaped forms contrasting against the intricately designed filigree mountings in gold and silver. The cups, while simple in their natural state, are elevated to works of art through the skillful addition of precious metals. The International Exhibition of 1862, held in London, was a cultural event that brought together various nations to showcase their achievements in art, industry, and technology. The Algerian Court was a dedicated pavilion that showcased the artistic and cultural riches of Algeria, then a French colony. The cups, with their quaint appearance and unique aspect, were a point of interest for visitors to the exhibition. The cups, formed from ostrich eggs, were a rare sight in Europe at the time, making them all the more intriguing. The engraving on the shells is less noteworthy, but the filigree mountings add a level of ornate decoration that enhances their overall appeal. The photograph, taken over a century and a half ago, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such objects were considered curiosities and treasured for their rarity and craftsmanship.
