The International Exhibition - "Girl of the Parish of Rattvik, in Decarlia, by the Fireside", by Johan Frederick Hockert, 1862. Engraving of a painting. The costumes...[of] Dalecarlia, properly Dalarne (the valley country), a former "province" of Sweden...are quaintly picturesque...A great quantity of clothes is put on here to keep the cold out, as in some warn latitudes almost as much is worn to keep the heat out. This young girl, though enveloped in a rough sheepskin jacket (with the wool inside), is not insensible to the fascinations of finery, judging by her very richly-embroidered work-bag or reticule, the showy worsted balls hanging from her droll-looking headdress, and her striped petticoat. The thick shoes, with their high heels and iron toe-pieces and nails, are, we suppose, a necessary protection on the snowy and frozen ground...The "fireplace''...is very unlike anything we call by that pleasant name. It is a great cavity, with iron supports, excavated at some distance from the ground out of the projecting angle of a wall. The box is, we presume, a saltbox, placed in readiness to flavour the broth'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The International Exhibition - Girl of the Parish of Rattvik, in Decarlia, by the Fireside, 1862
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by W. Thomas, based on a painting by Johan Frederick Hockert. This image offers a glimpse into the traditional life of Dalecarlia, a former province of Sweden, showcasing the unique and picturesque costumes of its people. The young girl in the photograph is dressed in layers of clothing to keep warm against the harsh winter. She wears a rough sheepskin jacket, with the wool inside, and is not immune to the allure of finery, as evidenced by her richly-embroidered work-bag or reticule, and the showy worsted balls adorning her headdress. Her striped petticoat adds a pop of color to her otherwise monochromatic ensemble. The footwear in the photograph is also noteworthy, with thick shoes featuring high heels and iron toe-pieces and nails, providing necessary protection on the snowy and frozen ground. The fireplace, a vital source of warmth, is very different from what we might call a fireplace today. It is a large cavity, with iron supports, excavated at some distance from the ground out of the projecting angle of a wall. The box next to the fireplace is presumed to be a saltbox, placed in readiness to flavor the broth. This enchanting image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the people of Dalecarlia, showcasing their unique customs and traditions. The quaint costumes, the cozy fireside, and the simple yet essential tools of daily life make for a captivating and intriguing portrait of a bygone era.
