The International Exhibition: the orchestrion, by M. Welte, of Vöhrenbach... 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: the orchestrion, by M. Welte, of Vohrenbach, in the Zollverein Department, 1862. Instrument...named, "an orchestrion, " from the number of different instruments it plays - producing the effect of a hand or orchestra on a small scale - of very ingenious and elaborate construction...The instrument has 39 barrels, 15 different registers, with 524 pipes - imitating flutes, flageolets, piccolos, oboes, trumpets, horns, trombones, &c....the instrument [also] contains a big-drum, kettle-drum, small military-drum, triangles, and cymbals. The orchestrion performs a number of overtures and pieces of music...some symphonies of Beethoven, &c. played with considerable precision and correctness...When the full number of instruments is played the tone is very powerful, and the effect almost equal to a small band. The self-acting machinery...is very ingenious...The music is marked on the barrels by a cleverly-contrived time-machine, which pricks or marks the spots where the pins are afterwards inserted which are to move the keys or levers which permit the notes to sound. By this time-machine the barrels can be marked with the greatest accuracy and precision, the marker playing the notes as if performing on a keyed instrument'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The International Exhibition: The Orchestrion by M. Welte of Vöhrenbach, 1862, is an intriguing and complex mechanical musical instrument that has captivated audiences for over a century. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, but the description from the Illustrated London News provides a detailed account of its ingenious design and capabilities. This orchestrion, named for the large number of different instruments it plays, produces the effect of a hand orchestra on a small scale. With 39 barrels, 15 different registers, and 524 pipes, it can imitate various instruments such as flutes, flageolets, piccolos, oboes, trumpets, horns, trombones, and more. The instrument also contains a big-drum, kettle-drum, small military-drum, triangles, and cymbals, expanding its repertoire further. The orchestrion performs a diverse range of overtures and pieces of music, including symphonies by Beethoven and other renowned composers, with considerable precision and correctness. When all the instruments are played, the tone is powerful, and the effect is almost equal to a small band. The self-acting machinery of the orchestrion is a marvel of engineering. The music is marked on the barrels using a time-machine, which pricks or marks the spots where the pins are later inserted, allowing the keys or levers to move and produce the notes. This time-machine enables the barrels to be marked with great accuracy and precision, making the performance as precise as if a musician were playing the notes on a keyed instrument. The Orchestrion by M. Welte of Vöhrenbach, 1862, is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Victorian era, showcasing the remarkable advancements in mechanical musical instruments during that time.
