The International Exhibition: "Temple of Art", in vegetable ivory, by B. Taylor, 1862. This work makes no pretentions to architectural beauty...its interest consists in its being formed of "vegetable ivory"...Vegetable ivory is the seed of a kind of palm, the Phytelaphas macrocarpa. Four seeds grow in each cell or cavity of a large fruit...It was Humboldt who first drew our attention to this seed, and pointed out its adaptability to useful purposes; and now we find it wrought into articles of beauty and utility...Mr. B. Taylor...exhibits his temple and numerous little articles at the eastern side of the eastern annexe, where souvenirs of the exhibition can be procured'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the Temple of Art, a masterpiece crafted entirely from vegetable ivory by British artist B. Taylor in 1862. The creator of this image remains unknown, but its allure lies not only in the intricate design of the temple, but also in the unusual medium used – vegetable ivory. Vegetable ivory, derived from the seeds of the Phytelaphas macrocarpa palm, has long been recognized for its adaptability to artistic and utilitarian purposes. The seeds, which grow in the large fruit of this palm tree, have been used to create exquisite works of art since their discovery by naturalist Alexander von Humboldt in the early 19th century. The Temple of Art, displayed at the eastern side of the Eastern Annexe during the International Exhibition of 1862 in London, showcases the delicacy and ornate detailing possible with this natural material. The temple, along with numerous other small articles, served as a memento of the cultural event for visitors. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, highlights the intricacy of the temple's design, with its delicate carvings and engravings. The temple's lack of architectural beauty is noted in the caption, yet its interest lies in the unique material used and the artistry displayed. This photograph print is a testament to the artistic and cultural significance of the 19th century, showcasing the beauty and versatility of natural materials and the creativity of artists like B. Taylor.
