The International Exhibition: "The Wounded Achilles", a plaster statue, by Carl Cauer, 1862. The action of Achilles endeavouring to extract the arrow from his heel, and his heroic expression "dignifying pain, " are very good; but, in some respects, the model scarcely supports the sculptor's reputation, some parts of the anatomy not being correctly expressed. The occasional puffiness of the muscles might, it is true, disappear in the finished statue; but the extremities are too small, and there is too much weakness in the tendinous parts for the mighty hero of the "Iliad, " making due allowance for his agility and swiftness'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The International Exhibition: The Wounded Achilles, a plaster statue by Carl Cauer, 1862, is a captivating work of art that showcases the heroic yet vulnerable side of the legendary Greek mythological figure, Achilles. The statue, which was created for the Great London Exposition of 1862, depicts Achilles in the moment of attempting to extract an arrow from his infamous heel, an injury that rendered him invulnerable to most attacks but left him susceptible to this one weak point. The sculpture, created by the German artist Carl Cauer, captures the intensity and determination of Achilles, despite his pain. However, some critics of the time, such as the Illustrated London News, noted that the statue did not fully live up to Cauer's reputation, with some parts of the anatomy not being correctly expressed. The model appears to have occasional puffiness in the muscles, and the extremities are too small, with a weakness in the tendinous parts. These imperfections, however, might have been remedied in the finished statue. Despite these criticisms, The Wounded Achilles remains a significant work of art from the 19th century, showcasing the cultural importance of ancient Greek mythology and the human body in art. The engraving, taken from the Illustrated London News, provides a glimpse into the critical reception of the statue during its time and serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this iconic figure in art and mythology.
