The iron steam screw collier, 'Q. E. D. ', 1844
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the arrival of a remarkable innovation in the coal trade on the river Thames. The vessel in question is an iron steam screw collier known as "Q. E. D. ", which has quickly become a source of great curiosity and admiration. With its handsome appearance and barque rigging, complete with taunt masts and square yards that elegantly rake aft, this iron vessel stands out among its peers. Built by Mr. Cootes at Walker's-quay near Newcastle, it boasts a unique hull construction and is powered by a 20 horse power engine designed by Hawthorn. The most striking feature of "Q. E. D" is undoubtedly its screw propeller—a brilliant combination of several inventions—powered by the aforementioned engine to propel the ship through water efficiently. As depicted in this black-and-white engraving from the Illustrated London News in 1844, "Q. E. D" has found her moorings at Princes Stairs in Rotherhithe, attracting considerable attention from passersby along with their genuine curiosity about this technological marvel. This image not only showcases an important development in transportation during the nineteenth century but also highlights Britain's prowess as an industrial powerhouse during that era. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of progress.
