Our Ironclad Fleet: H.M.S. Inflexible, 1876. The Inflexible is the greatest result yet attained by our naval architects and Board of Admiralty...[at] an estimated first cost of £521, 000...many novelties have been introduced...One of the most important is the castle which protects her guns...The castle...is so contrived as to provide the guns with a full command of the horizon, and at the same time to render a flying deck unnecessary, while it affords good accommodation for officers and men...The [iron] plating is in two thicknesses of 12 in. each...Thus a shell penetrating one of the sides of the Inflexible, would encounter first 12 in. of iron, then a thick mass of wood, then 12 in. more iron, and, finally, the ordinary backing...[She] was designed by Mr. N. Barnaby, Director of Naval Construction, and was built under the superintendence of Mr. W. B. Robinson, Chief Constructor...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases H.M.S. Inflexible, an ironclad warship that revolutionized naval warfare in the late 19th century. The Inflexible, built in 1876, was a groundbreaking achievement for British naval architects and the Board of Admiralty. With an estimated first cost of £521,000, this vessel introduced numerous innovations that set a new standard in shipbuilding. One of the most significant features of the Inflexible was the castle, a protective structure surrounding the guns. This castle design enabled the guns to have a full command of the horizon while rendering a flying deck unnecessary. It also provided excellent accommodation for officers and men. The iron plating was unique in its design, consisting of two thicknesses of 12 inches each. A shell penetrating one side of the Inflexible would first encounter 12 inches of iron, followed by a thick mass of wood, another 12 inches of iron, and finally, the ordinary backing. The Inflexible was designed by Mr. N. Barnaby, the Director of Naval Construction, and was built under the supervision of Mr. W.B. Robinson, the Chief Constructor. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, provides a glimpse into the technological advancements and engineering prowess that defined the era of ironclad warships. The Inflexible represented the pinnacle of naval engineering at the time, setting the stage for future developments in naval warfare.
