This stunning 19th century print, created in the Workshop of Kawahara Keiga, captures a bird's-eye view of Deshima Island, an artificial fan-shaped island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. For over 220 years, Deshima served as the central hub for foreign trade and cultural exchange between Japan and the outside world during the Edo period. The island was the only Japanese territory open to Westerners, and was governed by the Dutch. In the foreground of this image, we see closed gates and steps connecting the island to the mainland. A red-white-and-blue flag flies atop a flagpole on the right, signifying the presence of the Dutch.
