EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States during a tumultuous period in American history. With his stern gaze and dignified presence, Davis symbolizes the political turmoil that engulfed the nation during the American Civil War. In January 1861, after Mississippi seceded from the Union, Davis resigned from the US Senate to lead his newly formed Confederacy. This pivotal moment marked a turning point in American history and set off a chain reaction that would shape the future of an entire nation. The image showcases Davis' inauguration as provisional President at Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery on February 18th, 1861. Surrounded by fellow statesmen and supporters, he exudes confidence and determination amidst uncertain times. However, despite his initial success leading the Confederacy through four years of war against Union forces, Davis was eventually captured by Northern cavalry in 1865. Imprisoned for two years before being released without trial or conviction, he became a controversial figure whose legacy continues to be debated today. This lithograph serves as a reminder of both Davis' role as a prominent politician and leader during one of America's darkest periods and also represents an important piece of historical documentation capturing this influential figure's likeness for generations to come.
