Jesters, c1955. Creator: Shirley Markham
Jesters, c1955. Jesters and fools through the ages. Page from " Marvelman" comic. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Jesters, c1955" showcases the artistic brilliance of Shirley Markham, a talented creator whose work remained hidden for many years. Markham's unique style of drawing was greatly influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. During her time at the Central School of Art in London, she had the privilege of being taught by Mervyn Peake, a writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. In this particular piece from her portfolio featured in the "Marvelman" comic book series, Markham explores the fascinating world of jesters and fools throughout history. The image exudes a sense of whimsy and playfulness while capturing the essence of these intriguing characters. Despite her undeniable talent and promising career prospects as a graphic designer producing illustrations for books, comics, menus, and programs; societal expectations during that era led Markham to abandon her professional aspirations after getting married in 1957. Middle-class women were often expected to focus solely on raising children and managing household responsibilities. For years following her departure from illustration work, Markham's remarkable collection lay forgotten in an attic until now. This publication marks its long-awaited debut into the public eye—an opportunity for art enthusiasts to appreciate Shirley Markham's exceptional talent that once went unnoticed but is now rightfully celebrated.
