Not for Joe!, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain
Not for Joe!, 1885. Mr George Goschen had been the Liberal governments President of the Poor Law Board. Here he is being wooed by Lord Randolph Churchill of the Conservative Party, having been refused a place on the coach being driven by Joseph Chamberlain, who represents the Radical wing of the Liberal Party. Mr Goschen had recently been outspoken in his criticism of the Radicals and their policies, but Churchill and other Conservatives had made it known that they would be more than willing to accept him into their fold. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 14, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Not for Joe!, 1885" captures a significant moment in British politics during the late 19th century. The image depicts Mr George Goschen, former President of the Poor Law Board under the Liberal government, being courted by Lord Randolph Churchill of the Conservative Party. Interestingly, Goschen had been denied a place on Joseph Chamberlain's coach, who represented the Radical wing of the Liberal Party. Goschen's recent criticism of radical policies had caught the attention of Churchill and other Conservatives who were eager to welcome him into their fold. This political maneuvering is cleverly portrayed in this caricature-like engraving from Punch magazine. The black and white monochrome image adds to its satirical nature while highlighting key figures such as George Joachim Goschen, Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill, and Joseph Swain (the creator). Notably, John Tenniel's artistic contribution also enhances this historical snapshot. This heritage image partnership provides us with a glimpse into an era marked by intense political rivalries and shifting allegiances. It serves as a reminder that even within parties or movements, individuals can hold differing views and be subject to persuasion or rejection based on their alignment with specific ideologies. Overall, "Not for Joe!, 1885" encapsulates both the complexity and intrigue surrounding British politics during this period.
