John Gilpins horse bolts, and his hat and wig blow off, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a comical scene from the famous ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" by William Cowper. Created in 1878 by Randolph Caldecott, this image depicts the moment when John Gilpin's horse bolts, causing his hat and wig to blow off. The humorous narrative poem tells the story of Gilpin, a draper, who gets separated from his family during a journey to Edmonton in London. In this picture, we see Gilpin desperately trying to regain control of his galloping horse as he races down an avenue. His disheveled appearance adds to the comedic effect as his hat and wig fly through the air behind him. The monochrome setting enhances the timeless quality of this eighteenth-century tale. Caldecott's illustration perfectly captures the chaos and humor that unfolds in Cowper's ballad. Through clever use of metaphor and visual storytelling, both artists bring to life this iconic character who finds himself on an unexpected adventure far from his intended destination. This print serves as a delightful reminder of British literary heritage and Caldecott's talent for capturing moments filled with wit and charm. It is a testament to how art can transcend time, allowing us to appreciate stories that have entertained generations throughout history.
