John kneeling for forgiveness before his brother Richard

Prince John kneeling for forgiveness before his brother King Richard I. Richard (1157-1199) was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. John (1167-1216) reigned as King of England from 1199 until his death in 1216. He succeeded to the throne as the younger brother of King Richard I. He was a Plantagenet (or Angevin) king. From Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in history as John, the younger brother of King Richard I, kneels before him, seeking forgiveness. The image portrays a scene filled with complex emotions and familial tension. Richard, known as Richard the Lionheart for his military prowess, was revered even before ascending to the throne. His reputation preceded him as a fearless warrior who spent little time in England during his reign. Instead, he embarked on the Third Crusade and fought tirelessly to reclaim territories in France. In contrast, John's reign was marked by controversy and conflict. As a Plantagenet king, he faced numerous challenges during his rule from 1199 until his death in 1216. This engraving depicts an intimate moment between brothers against the backdrop of war and battlefield. John's act of kneeling symbolizes humility and repentance as he pleads for reconciliation with Richard. It showcases their shared bloodline but also highlights the complexities of power dynamics within royal families. This black-and-white print serves as a visual reminder of this significant historical event that shaped both English monarchy and European politics at large. It is a testament to how moments of forgiveness can transcend conflicts and remind us of our shared humanity amidst turbulent times.
