EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Stainer, the renowned organist of St Paul's Cathedral in 1878. Captured by Lock & Whitfield, this image immortalizes a man who made significant contributions to the world of music and beyond. Before his tenure at St Paul's Cathedral, Stainer had already established himself as an accomplished organist at St Michaels College, Tenbury, and Oxford University. However, it was during his time at St Paul's that he truly left his mark. Implementing reforms to the musical service there, he expanded the repertory and increased the number of musicians involved. Stainer's influence extended far beyond his role as an organist. He played a pivotal role in founding the Musical Association and later became a professor of music at Oxford University. His compositions were highly regarded during his lifetime; even today, many continue to use his hymn tunes. One of Stainer's most notable works is "The Crucifixion" an oratorio composed in 1887 that remains beloved by audiences worldwide. In recognition of his immense talent and contributions to music, he was knighted in 1888. Lock & Whitfield expertly captured not only John Stainer's physical appearance but also the essence of a man whose dedication to church music, scholarship, composition, and leadership left an indelible impact on society.
