It comprised a collection of curiosities assembled by John Tradescant the elder (c1570-1638) and his son (1608-1662) in a building called The Ark. Following the death of the younger Tradescant, the collection passed onto Elias Ashmole, who in 1691 gave it to Oxford University as the nucleus of the newly founded Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic John Tradescants House at Kennington, dating back to around 1883. The house, depicted in this wood engraving by Elias Ashmole from 1912, was home to the Musaeum Tradescantianum - England's first public museum. Originally curated by John Tradescant the elder and his son, this collection of curiosities was housed in a building known as The Ark. After the passing of John Tradescant the younger, the collection found its way into the hands of Elias Ashmole. In 1691, Ashmole generously donated it to Oxford University as a foundation for what would become the renowned Ashmolean Museum. The image showcases not only an architectural gem but also offers glimpses into London life during that era. A man can be seen walking along a road adjacent to the house while smoke billows out from chimneys nearby. This snapshot transports us back in time to witness both historical significance and everyday scenes unfolding simultaneously. With its monochrome aesthetic capturing every intricate detail of this nineteenth-century facade, this print is a testament to British heritage and literature. It serves as a reminder of how one man's passion for collecting curiosities led to an enduring legacy that continues today through one of Britain's most esteemed institutions - Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum.
