Joseph Dalton Hooker, English botanist, plant geographer and collector
Joseph Dalton Hooker, English botanist, plant geographer and collector. Born in Halesworth, Suffolk, Hooker (1817-1911) served as surgeon-botanist on British Antarctic expedition of HMS Discovery and HMS Erebus in 1839-1843. He made a three year trip to the Himalayas in 1848-1850, bringing back 7000 specimens from the expedition. Amongst these were 25 new species of rhododendron, half as many again as were then known, leading to something of a rhododendron craze amongst British gardeners. In 1855 Hooker became Assistant Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and took over the post of Director from his father, Sir William Hooker, in 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, a renowned English botanist, plant geographer, and collector. Born in Halesworth, Suffolk in 1817, Hooker's contributions to the field of botany are truly remarkable. The image showcases his distinguished appearance with a full beard and spectacles that exude wisdom and intellect. As an accomplished scientist of the 19th century, Hooker made significant contributions to botanical exploration. Notably, he served as surgeon-botanist on the British Antarctic expedition aboard HMS Discovery and HMS Erebus from 1839-1843. During this voyage, he collected invaluable specimens that furthered our understanding of plant life in Antarctica. Hooker's passion for discovery led him to embark on a three-year expedition to the Himalayas from 1848-1850. His findings were extraordinary; he brought back over 7000 specimens including twenty-five new species of rhododendron. This discovery sparked a craze among British gardeners who eagerly sought these unique plants for their own gardens. In recognition of his expertise and accomplishments, Hooker was appointed Assistant Director at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in 1855 before eventually assuming the role of Director in 1865 following his father's tenure. This print is not just an image but a glimpse into the life and legacy of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker – a man whose dedication to science revolutionized our understanding of plants and left an indelible mark on botanical history.
