EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the celebratory atmosphere at Crewe Railway Locomotive Factory Works in 1876, marking the completion of their two-thousandth engine. Crewe, a bustling hub of railway engineering, had been established and thrived under the employment of manufacturing and repairing locomotive engines for the London and North-Western Railway Company. In recognition of this significant milestone, the Company granted a day's holiday and generous pay to its 6000 workforce, leading to a unique "railway jubilee." A grand procession was organized, consisting of four distinct divisions: the Bessemer steelworks, the forge, the rail-works, the engine-works, and various other departments such as erecting and fitting, boiler-making, joiners, wheelwrights, moulders, carriage-building and fitting, painting, and repairing. Each division proudly showcased its workforce, accompanied by their respective bands of music. The procession was preceded by the company's fire brigade and followed by a volunteer fire brigade, adding to the festive spirit. The Illustrated London News reported on this momentous occasion, capturing the spirit of unity and camaraderie among the workers and the importance of their role in the railway industry. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity, hard work, and dedication of the men and women who played a pivotal role in shaping the railway network of the late 19th century.
