King George's Sound, 1857. Creator: Unknown
King George's Sound, 1857. View near...the southwestern extremity of the Australian continent. It consists of an outer sound and two inner basins or harbours, which are perfectly landlocked, and afford every security for ships. The basin, called Princess Royal Harbour...can be entered by vessels of considerable size, which ride at anchor close to the shore, in perfect security. The other basin, called Oyster Harbour, is not so secure. As there is no harbour within a great distance of it, either on the southern or western coast of Australia, which offers such advantages as King George's Sound, colonists were sent there from Sydney as early as 1826; and this settlement has been of great advantage to the colony of Swan River...it is very conveniently situated for the purposes of refreshment and refitting vessels bound to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land...The natives...are friendly to settlers'. EDITORS COMMENTS
King George's Sound, 1857: A Natural Harbour of Refuge and Prosperity This photograph, taken in 1857, showcases the breathtaking beauty of King George's Sound, located at the southwestern extremity of the Australian continent. The sound consists of an outer sound and two inner basins or harbours, both of which are landlocked, providing perfect security for ships. The larger basin, named Princess Royal Harbour, is particularly noteworthy. Its shallow depth and sheltered location make it accessible to vessels of considerable size, allowing them to anchor close to the shore in complete safety. The other basin, known as Oyster Harbour, while not as secure, offers unique advantages. With no other harbour of comparable size and security in the vicinity, either on the southern or western coast of Australia, King George's Sound became an essential stop for settlers and mariners. Colonists were first sent to establish a settlement in King George's Sound as early as 1826, and it proved to be of great benefit to the Swan River Colony. The location was conveniently situated for the purposes of refreshment and refitting vessels bound to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. The native inhabitants of the region were known to be friendly towards settlers, adding to the appeal of the area. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the natural beauty and historical significance of King George's Sound, a testament to its enduring allure and importance in the early history of Australia.
