King Richard II stops the duel between the Dukes of Hereford and Norfolk, 1398 (1864)

King Richard II stops the duel between the Dukes of Hereford and Norfolk, 1398 (1864). Thomas de Mowbray (1366-1399), 1st Duke of Norfolk, and Henry Bolingbroke (c1366-1413), 1st Duke of Hereford, were two of the Lords Appellant who deposed many of the Kings favourites and seized effective power in England after a rebellion in 1387. With the assistance of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster, Richard (1367-1400) gradually reasserted his power and was able to destroy the influence of the Lords Appellant in 1397. Norfolk spoke of taking revenge against the King in a conversation to Hereford and word reached Richard. Norfolk claimed that Hereford was a liar and challenged him to a combat. Hereford was sentenced to 10 years exile and Norfolk was banished for life. Hereford returned to England in 1399 however and deposed Richard, claiming the throne as Henry IV

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures a pivotal moment in English history, as King Richard II intervenes to halt the heated duel between the Dukes of Hereford and Norfolk in 1398. The image, created by James William Edmund Doyle in 1864, showcases the tension and power struggle that engulfed England during this time. Thomas de Mowbray, the Duke of Norfolk, and Henry Bolingbroke, the Duke of Hereford, were prominent figures known as Lords Appellant. They had risen to power after a rebellion in 1387 and successfully deposed many of the king's favorites. However, with John of Gaunt's support, King Richard gradually regained control and crushed their influence by 1397. In this scene depicted by Doyle's lithograph, tensions reach boiling point when Norfolk accuses Hereford of lying about his loyalty to the king. This accusation leads to a challenge for combat between them. Yet before swords clash or lances strike their targets, King Richard steps forward on horseback to prevent bloodshed. This dramatic intervention ultimately shapes history itself. Although Hereford is initially banished for ten years while Norfolk faces lifelong exile due to their dispute; it is Hereford who returns in 1399 seeking revenge against Richard. Deposing him from his throne under claims of legitimacy as Henry IV marks a turning point for England. Doyle's artwork not only captures this crucial moment but also highlights the intricate details such as medieval attire and mounted knights ready for battle. It serves as an enduring reminder of political turmoil within aristocracy during Britain's fourteenth century - an era where honor was fiercely defended through both words and weapons.
