This stunning folio from the Bhagavata Purana, an ancient Hindu scripture, depicts the legendary tale of Krishna killing the Crane Demon. Dating back to the 16th century, possibly the 1530s, this artwork originated in the Mughal Empire of India or Hindustan, in South East Asia. The image showcases Krishna, the blue-skinned deity, standing on the shore with a group of men, all in various postures, as they witness the event. Krishna, with his back arched and head tilted back, is in the process of plucking out the Crane Demon's beak, using his bare hands. The demon, with its grey, opaque watercolor and ink body, lies defeated at Krishna's feet.
