Laird's Patent Sectional Boat, built for Her Majesty's Consul at Fernando Po, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Laird's Patent Sectional Boat, built for Her Majesty's Consul at Fernando Po, 1850. This Boat...is the invention of Mr. Macgregor Laird. The peculiarity of construction consists in her being built in sections, which can be put together, and made perfectly secure, without mechanical or skilled labour...There are eight sectional pieces - the heaviest of which is 16 cwt. - joined together by angle iron joints, lined with vulcanised India-rubber; the whole being secured by screw bolts and nuts, so that her own crew, of forty-five or fifty men, can carry her over any neck of land and set her up again...From her light draught of water and general lightness, she is particularly well adapted to take the bars on the coast of Africa, where there is a short breaking sea; and for proceeding up the rivers, or to go in chase of slavers, as, from her construction, she must pull and sail very fast'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Laird's Patent Sectional Boat, a remarkable engineering feat built for Her Majesty's Consul at Fernando Po in 1850. The creator of this innovative watercraft remains unknown, but its unique design is attributed to Scottish engineer, Macgregor Laird. The boat's most distinctive feature is its sectional construction, consisting of eight interchangeable pieces, each weighing up to 16 cwt. These sections are joined together using angle iron joints, lined with vulcanized India-rubber, and secured with screw bolts and nuts. This ingenious design allowed the boat's crew of forty-five to fifty men to transport and assemble the vessel over land, making it an ideal solution for navigating the challenging terrain and waterways of Africa. The boat's light draught and overall lightness made it perfectly suited for the shallow waters and short breaking seas along the African coast. Furthermore, its ability to pull and sail quickly made it an effective tool for pursuing slavers. The Laird's Patent Sectional Boat was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the time, enabling exploration and navigation in even the most remote and challenging locations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the remarkable engineering achievements that have shaped our maritime history.
