Landscape, 1500-1525. Creator: Soami (Japanese, d. 1525)
Landscape, 1500-1525. Kyoto-based painter Soami adapted the small-format Chinese album leaf and handscroll painting compositions belonging to the Ashikaga shogunate to the large-scale paintings he created for residences and Buddhist temples. As curator of the shogunal collection, Soami would have carefully examined its Southern Song and Yuan dynasty Chinese paintings, gaining specialized knowledge of a variety of brush modes, including the soft style used for this painting. The scene is part of a continuous landscape once mounted in the folding screen format. Removed from the screen, this section of the painting was cut down, given new backing papers and a textile mounting with a hanging cord at the top and a roller with knobs at the bottom so that it could continue to be appreciated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning landscape painting created by Soami, a renowned Kyoto-based painter who flourished during the Muromachi period in Japan. Soami skillfully adapted the small-format Chinese album leaf and handscroll painting compositions of the Ashikaga shogunate to create large-scale paintings for residences and Buddhist temples. As the curator of the shogunal collection, Soami meticulously studied Southern Song and Yuan dynasty Chinese paintings, acquiring specialized knowledge of various brush modes. This particular artwork demonstrates his mastery of the soft style technique, which lends an ethereal quality to the scene. Originally part of a continuous landscape mounted on folding screens, this section was later removed from its original format. It underwent alterations including cutting down in size, receiving new backing papers, and being mounted with textiles. The top features a hanging cord while at the bottom there is a roller with knobs – all designed to ensure that this exquisite piece could continue to be appreciated. Dating back to 1500-1525 during Japan's rich heritage art era (1392-1573), this ink-on-paper hanging scroll exemplifies Soami's artistic brilliance and his contribution to Japanese art history. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's esteemed collection, it serves as a testament to both Soami's talent as well as his dedication towards adapting traditional Chinese techniques into unique Japanese masterpieces.
