Landscape, 1815. Creator: Shunkin Uragami (Japanese, 1779-1846)
Landscape, 1815. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning landscape painting created by the talented Japanese artist Shunkin Uragami in 1815. The artwork belongs to the Nanga, or "Southern School" painters, who were deeply influenced by Chinese culture during the 17th and 18th centuries in Japan. This particular piece beautifully reflects the contemporary Japanese fascination with imported Chinese objects and knowledge. The Nanga painters had a tradition of exchanging small paintings and calligraphies among themselves, as well as commemorating special gatherings of artist-friends through collaborative album creations. The sheets displayed in this print were part of one such gathering, where individual artworks were brought together to form an exquisite collection. Executed on ivory silk using ink and light color techniques during the Edo period (1615-1868), this masterpiece exemplifies Uragami's exceptional talent and mastery of his craft. Its serene beauty transports viewers into a tranquil natural setting, inviting them to appreciate its harmonious composition and delicate brushwork. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable artwork serves as a testament to Uragami's artistic legacy within Japanese art history.
