Landscape with a Road to a Castle on an Island in a River, 1554. Creator: Hanns Lautensack (German
Landscape with a Road to a Castle on an Island in a River, 1554. Hanns Lautensack was born in Bamberg, but fled to Nuremberg with his family in 1527 to escape religious persecution. Although he is referred to as a painter in various documents, no examples survive. He made 16 small landscape etchings in 1553 and 1554. Like Altdorfer and Hirschvogel, Lautensack depicted inhabited, mountainous views reminiscent of the German countryside with details such as huge pine trees with dripping branches, calm rivers, and castles perched on rock outcrops

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning landscape with a road leading to a majestic castle situated on an island in the middle of a tranquil river. Created by Hanns Lautensack, a German artist born in Bamberg but forced to flee to Nuremberg due to religious persecution, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of the German countryside during the 16th century. Although no surviving paintings by Lautensack exist today, he left behind his legacy through 16 small landscape etchings made between 1553 and 1554. In this particular piece, reminiscent of works by Altdorfer and Hirschvogel, Lautensack portrays inhabited mountainous views adorned with towering pine trees whose branches gracefully drip downwards. The serene river flows calmly beneath them while the castle stands proudly atop rocky outcrops. The attention to detail in this print is truly remarkable; every element contributes harmoniously to create an idyllic scene that transports viewers back in time. As we gaze upon this masterpiece from Heritage Art/Heritage Images at The Cleveland Museum of Art, we are reminded of both the artistic skill and historical significance captured within its frame. This print not only serves as a visual delight but also offers us insight into the life and work of Hanns Lautensack, who overcame adversity and used his talent to immortalize Germany's natural beauty for generations to come.
