Large scale, commercial agriculture, Salinas Valley, California, 1939. Creator: Dorothea Lange
Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture. This single California County (Monterey) shipped 20, 096 carlots of lettuce in 1934, or forty-five percent of all carlot shipments in the United States. In the same year 73.8 percent of all United States carlot shipments were made from Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California (7, 797 carlots) and Maricopa County, Arizona (4, 697). Production of lettuce is largely in the hands of a comparatively small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operate in two or all three of these counties. Labor is principally Mexican and Filipino in the fields, and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers follow the harvests from one valley to the other, since plantings are staggered to maintain a fairly even flow of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939, captures the vast expanse of commercial agriculture in the Salinas Valley of California during the 1930s. At the time, Monterey County in California was the leading producer of lettuce in the United States, accounting for approximately 45% of all lettuce carlots shipped in the country. The image showcases the large-scale farming operations that dominated this region, with furrows stretching as far as the eye can see. The labor force was primarily made up of Mexican and Filipino workers in the fields, and white American workers in the packing sheds. Many of these workers followed the harvests from one valley to another, as plantings were staggered to maintain a consistent supply of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year. During the Great Depression, the agricultural sector, particularly in California, faced significant economic challenges. The Farm Security Administration (FSA), an agency of the New Deal, was established to provide relief and support to farmers and rural communities. Dorothea Lange, a photographer for the FSA, captured the resilience and determination of the American agricultural workforce during this difficult period. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the importance of agriculture to the American economy, and the role it plays in shaping the rural landscape. The image also highlights the diversity of the labor force and the interconnectedness of different regions in the production and distribution of food. The photograph is a nitrate negative, and is part of the Dorothea Lange Collection in the Library of Congress. It is a testament to Lange's ability to capture the essence of a moment in time, and to tell a compelling story through the medium of photography.
