The Late Attack upon Marshal Haynau - the Bed-Room in which Marshal Haynau was Concealed, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Late Attack upon Marshal Haynau - the Bed-Room in which Marshal Haynau was Concealed, 1850. After being attacked by angry workers during a visit to a brewery in Southwark, London, Austrian general Julius Jacob von Haynau...ran in a frantic manner along Bankside until he came to the George public-house, when, finding the doors open, he rushed in and proceeded upstairs into one of the bedrooms, to the utter astonishment of Mrs. Benfield, the landlady, who soon discovered his name and the reason of his entering the house. The furious throng rushed in after him, threatening to do for the "Austrian Butcher" but, fortunately for him, the house is very old-fashioned, and contains a vast number of doors, which were all forced open, except the room in which the Marshal was concealed'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Late Attack upon Marshal Haynau - the Bed-Room in which Marshal Haynau was Concealed, 1850" is a captivating and historically significant image that depicts a pivotal moment during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The photograph, which is actually an engraving from the Illustrated London News, shows Austrian General Julius Jacob von Haynau hiding in a bedroom at the George Inn on Bankside, London, after being attacked by angry workers during a visit to a brewery. The scene is set in a dimly lit, old-fashioned bedroom with a four-poster bed taking center stage. The general, dressed in military uniform, is shown cowering in fear beneath the bedcovers, his face contorted with alarm and surprise. The room's door is wide open, revealing a chaotic scene outside as men in working clothes storm through the inn, searching for their quarry. The expression "Austrian Butcher" was a common nickname for Haynau due to his brutal tactics during the revolution. The image captures the fearful and frightening moment when the general, who was known for his ruthlessness, found himself in a vulnerable position. The scene is both humorous and tense, with the contrast between the elegant bedroom and the rough, working-class men outside adding to the intrigue. The print, which is from the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into the events of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and the chaos that ensued during that time. It is a reminder of the power of the press to capture and document historical moments, and the enduring impact that such images can have on our understanding of the past.
