The late Duke of Palmella, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The late Duke of Palmella, 1850. Portrait of Portuguese diplomat and statesman Pedro de Sousa Holstein, 1st Duke of Palmela, who...expired in the midst of his numerous family. He met his approaching fate in a most courageous manner, retaining his faculties to the last; and one of his last requests, before receiving the sacrament and taking leave of his family, was that his body might be opened after death, in order that the real nature of his protracted sufferings should be known and communicated, for the good of humanity, to the eminent medical practitioners whom the Duke had so recently consulted in Paris and London'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the noble visage of Pedro de Sousa Holstein, 1st Duke of Palmela, a prominent Portuguese diplomat and statesman who lived during the 19th century. The Duke, who was also known as Don Pedro de Sousa Holstein, was a commissary and politician of great repute in Portugal. He served his country with distinction in various capacities, both in his own nation and abroad. The Duke's life was marked by a long and protracted illness, which he bore with remarkable courage and fortitude. Despite his suffering, he remained mentally sharp and engaged with the world around him until the very end. In the face of his impending demise, he made a poignant request: that his body be opened after death, so that the nature of his suffering could be studied by the eminent medical practitioners whom he had recently consulted in Paris and London. This request was a testament to the Duke's deep commitment to the welfare of humanity, and his unwavering belief in the power of knowledge to improve the human condition. The portrait, which was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, serves as a poignant reminder of the Duke's life and legacy. It is a powerful image of a man who, even in the midst of great personal pain, remained dedicated to the greater good.
