EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is a tribute to the late Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876), a renowned German poet whose literary career began at an impressively young age. His earliest published poems date back to 1826 when he was merely sixteen years old. Freiligrath's most characteristic works emerged during the period between the two French revolutions in 1830 and 1848, a time when German intellectual circles were deeply influenced by French ideas. After the political upheavals of 1848 compelled him into exile, Freiligrath spent many years in England, where he became intimately familiar with the English language and its literature. He played a significant role in introducing recent English literary productions to Germany. In the last two years of his life, he edited a magazine in Stuttgart. However, much of his life was spent in the bustling environment of a banker's or merchant's counting-house. The image of Freiligrath, captured by the London Stereoscopic Company, showcases the poet in his later years, with a full beard and a thoughtful expression. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1876, serves as a poignant reminder of the life and literary contributions of this extraordinary man. Freiligrath's enduring legacy continues to inspire readers and scholars alike, bridging the gap between German and English literary traditions.
