EDITORS COMMENTS
"This engraving is a tribute to the late Sir John Taylor Coleridge, a distinguished British judge and a nephew of the renowned poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Born in the early 19th century, Sir John's academic achievements began at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he excelled in classical studies, winning a scholarship and obtaining a first class in classical honors. In 1810, he was awarded the Chancellor's University prize for Latin verse composition. In the following year, he gained both the Bachelor's prizes for essays in English and Latin, with topics being "Etymology" and "The Influence of the Censorship upon the Morals of the Roman People," respectively. Sir John's legal career took off in 1835 when he was appointed as one of the Judges of the Queen's Bench. At the young age of forty-five, he took his seat on the judicial bench and served for twenty-three years before retiring and being sworn a member of her Majesty's Privy Council. This black and white portrait, engraved from a photograph by Mr. Williams, captures the essence of a man who left an indelible mark on the legal system of his time. Sir John Taylor Coleridge's legacy as a judge and scholar continues to inspire and influence the legal profession and academia to this day."
