EDITORS COMMENTS
L'Attaque Navale de Zeebrugge et Ostende; Le 23 avril 1918, au matin, un raid naval d'une rare audace etait execute sur le cote flamand, contre Zeebrugge et Ostende, base de destroyers et de sous-marins allemands. This photograph captures the aftermath of one of the most daring naval raids during the First World War. On the morning of April 23, 1918, the British Royal Navy launched a surprise attack on the Belgian ports of Zeebrugge and Ostende, which were crucial German bases for submarines and destroyers. The audacious operation, known as the Zeebrugge Raid, involved the use of three old destroyers and a minesweeper, which were filled with explosives and deliberately grounded near the German-occupied ports. The resulting explosion caused significant damage to the German naval forces, disrupting their U-boat campaign in the Atlantic. The photograph shows the aftermath of the attack, with smoke rising from the wreckage of the destroyed ships and debris scattered across the water. The raid was a significant victory for the Allies and is considered a turning point in the Atlantic U-boat campaign. This photograph is from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924.
