Launch of the Australian Steam-ship "Pacific", at Millwall, 1854. Paddle steamer on the River Thames in London, built for the Sydney and Melbourne Steam-packet Company. It is expected that she will realise a speed of at least sixteen miles an hour at sea, under steam, without the aid of her sails...[with] accommodation for one hundred first-class passengers, and three hundred second-class, besides several hundred tons of cargo...Captain Thompson [said that he] would not be satisfied if he did not make the voyage [from Britain to Australia] in less than sixty days...The distance between Melbourne and Sydney is about six hundred miles, and it is calculated that the voyage will be accomplished in two days, and that the great speed of the Pacific will secure her a monopoly of the trade between these points...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the launch of the Australian steam-ship "Pacific" at Millwall, London, in 1854. The paddle steamer, built for the Sydney and Melbourne Steam-packet Company, was a marvel of maritime engineering, designed to revolutionize the journey across the sea to Australia. With an expected speed of sixteen miles an hour at sea, the "Pacific" was a significant improvement over previous vessels, offering both passengers and cargo a faster and more efficient means of transportation. The ship boasted impressive accommodations for one hundred first-class passengers and three hundred second-class, in addition to ample cargo space. During the launch ceremony, Captain Thompson expressed his determination to make the journey from Britain to Australia in less than sixty days. The distance between Melbourne and Sydney was approximately six hundred miles, and the "Pacific" was calculated to complete the voyage in just two days, securing a monopoly on the trade between these points. The "Illustrated London News" reported on the event, detailing the excitement and anticipation surrounding the new steam-ship. The launch of the "Pacific" marked a turning point in the history of trans-oceanic travel, paving the way for faster, more comfortable journeys across the sea. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the time, offering a glimpse into the past and the remarkable advancements that shaped the world we know today.
