Launch of 'The Braganza' Steamer at Cowes, 1844 - A Glimpse into Maritime History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous event in maritime history - the launch of "The Braganza" steamer at Cowes in 1844. The creator remains unknown, but their skillful engraving transports us back to that significant day. In this scene, sketched from the opposite shore of the Medina River, we witness the relaunch of "The Braganza" after undergoing extensive alterations at the Isle of Wight. This magnificent vessel belonged to the esteemed Peninsular and Oriental Steam Company, renowned for its large steamers. As our eyes wander through this image, we are introduced to more than just the ship itself. We catch a glimpse of Messrs. White's shipbuilding premises in West Cowes and Mr. Hausen's adjacent slip where another vessel named Kestrel awaits her own launch. "The Braganza" now elongated by an impressive 30 feet midships, stands as a splendid model under Captain James Down's command - her former captain who has returned to guide her on new voyages. Rumor has it that she will soon embark on journeys between London and Constantinople. This remarkable engraving was originally featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1844 - a testament to its historical significance even during those times. Today, it serves as a window into Victorian-era transportation and showcases Britain's prowess in shipbuilding and seafaring adventures. With signal flags fluttering proudly above her deck and bunting adorning nearby vessels, "The Braganza" symbolizes both progress and tradition within water transport during the nineteenth century.
