EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Launch of the 'Torino' at Blackwall, 1856," is a stunning testament to the industrial prowess and maritime innovation of the mid-19th century. The image, created by the renowned English photographer Edwin Weedon, captures the moment of the Torino's launch on the River Thames in London. The Torino, a magnificent steamship, was built by Messrs. C. Mare and Co. for the Genoese Transatlantic Navigation Company. Its design was the brainchild of the esteemed naval architect, Mr. James Ash. The anticipation was palpable as an immense crowd of spectators gathered to witness this significant event. The naming ceremony of the Torino was performed by Mdme. Petroni, adding an air of elegance and tradition to the occasion. The ship's construction and fitting out were overseen by the skilled Captain John Ford, who had previously worked with the General Screw Shipping Company. The Torino, with its nearly 2000-ton burden and 300-horsepower, measured 263 feet 4 inches long between the perpendiculars, 286 feet over all, 38 feet beam, and 27 feet depth of hold. Its engines were expertly crafted by Messrs. Maudslay and Co. The Torino represented the pinnacle of maritime technology and design, and its launch marked an exciting milestone in the history of transatlantic navigation. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the ingenuity and ambition that characterized the Victorian era, and the role that Britain played in shaping the world's maritime landscape.
