Leaf from a Book of Hours: The Raising of the Cross, c. 1510-1520. Creator: Unknown
Leaf from a Book of Hours: The Raising of the Cross, c. 1510-1520. This finely painted miniature is the work of an artist familiar with the designs of Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). Though not deriving from a known engraving or drawing, the style, composition, and especially the modeling of the figure of Christ refer to the draftsmanship and tonalities found in Durers works. This miniature depicts the moment the cross is raised. In the foreground, thuggish brutes struggle to bring it upright. The skull of Adam at the foot of the cross signifies that Golgotha was Adams burial place. In the background, a vivid blue sky recedes into pink as it meets the horizon and a distant town. The inclusion of an illusionistic, trompe loeil border, strewn with flowers and butterflies on a gold ground, follows the tradition of Ghent and Bruges, where such borders were first developed during the 1470s and 1480s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Book of Hours, specifically "The Raising of the Cross" created between 1510 and 1520 by an unknown artist. The exquisite painting exhibits strong influences from the renowned Albrecht Durer, evident in its style, composition, and the meticulous modeling of Christ's figure. While not directly derived from any known engraving or drawing, this miniature reflects Durer's draftsmanship and tonalities. The scene depicted captures the pivotal moment when the cross is being raised. In the foreground, brutish men struggle to lift it upright while Adam's skull at its foot symbolizes Golgotha as his burial place. As we gaze into the background, a vibrant blue sky gradually fades into pink upon meeting the horizon and revealing a distant town. Adding to its allure is an illusionistic trompe l'oeil border adorned with flowers and butterflies on a golden ground. This decorative element follows traditions established in Ghent and Bruges during the late 15th century when such borders were first developed. Crafted using tempera and liquid gold on vellum, this remarkable manuscript hails from Nuremberg in Germany during the 16th century. It now resides within The Cleveland Museum of Art where it continues to captivate viewers with its intricate details and masterful execution.
