EDITORS COMMENTS
This pen drawing, titled "The Legend of St. Cuthbert" created by artist Robert Spencer in 1923, transports us back to the fascinating tale of a monk, hermit, and Bishop named Cuthbert. The artwork depicts a pivotal moment in history when the monks decided to unearth his body eleven years after his passing. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we are immediately struck by the astonishment on the faces of the monks as they discover that St. Cuthbert's body remains incorrupt. The intricate details captured by Spencer bring this legendary event to life before our eyes. The composition skillfully combines elements of religion and literature within its pages. It is no wonder that this illustration was featured in British Book Illustration - Yesterday and Today edited by Geoffrey Holme in 1923. Through this print, we are transported to Lindisfarne, an island off England's Northumberland coast where St. Cuthbert's shrine resides inside a fine new church. The image evokes a sense of awe and reverence for this holy figure who played a significant role in Christianity during the 7th century. Robert Spencer's artistic prowess shines through as he expertly captures both the physicality and spirituality surrounding St. Cuthbert's legend with his precise pen strokes. This print serves as a testament to Spencer's talent and stands as an enduring tribute to one of Britain's most revered saints.
