Les Soirees de Rome: Le Puits, 1763-1764. Creator: Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808)
Les Soirees de Rome: Le Puits, 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings features fictional characters situated near recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. On the title page, Robert dedicated the suite to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 in the company of the wealthy author and art enthusiast Claude Henri Watelet. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers, and they socialized with a group that included artists and printmakers centered at the academies in Italy. Roberts dedication was likely motivated by the hope of future patronage from Le Compte. She may be the generous woman with a hand muff depicted in The Ancient Temple, the fifth scene in this series

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Les Soirees de Rome: Le Puits" a series of etchings created by the talented French artist Hubert Robert between 1763 and 1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, these prints depict fictional characters in various scenes set against the backdrop of recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. The suite of etchings begins with a title page where Robert dedicates his work to Marguerite Le Compte, who had visited Rome in 1764 alongside Claude Henri Watelet, an affluent author and art enthusiast. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers themselves and were part of a social circle that included artists and printmakers associated with Italian academies. It is believed that Robert's dedication was driven by the anticipation of future patronage from Le Compte. In fact, she might even be depicted as the generous woman wearing a hand muff in one of the scenes titled "The Ancient Temple" which is the fifth installment within this remarkable series. This particular print captures not only the beauty and intricacy of Robert's artwork but also provides insight into the artistic circles and relationships that flourished during this period. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece serves as a testament to Hubert Robert's talent as well as his aspirations for recognition among influential patrons like Marguerite Le Compte.
