EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Levee of the Season, 1874" captures a significant moment in history as Queen Victoria reviews her troops. Painted by renowned artist Joseph Swain, this image depicts the soldiers who valiantly fought in the Ashanti Campaign under the leadership of Sir Garnet Wolseley. The campaign's success brought about enhanced trade opportunities on the Gold Coast for Britain. In Windsor Great Park, all 1,600 troops returned from their victorious mission to be inspected by Her Majesty herself. Dressed immaculately in their uniforms and armed with guns and rifles, these brave men stand tall alongside their loyal horses. Amongst them is Sir Garnet Wolseley, distinguished with his KCB award and a substantial sum of £25,000. As we delve into this satirical engraving from Punch or the London Charivari magazine dated April 4th, 1874; it becomes evident that every detail has been meticulously captured. From soldiers' kilts to goats accompanying them on this grand occasion - no aspect has been overlooked. This heritage image partnership between Joseph Swain and John Tenniel transports us back to the 19th century when monarchs held immense power over nations. It serves as a reminder of Queen Victoria's reign as she inspects her loyal army with pride and authority. With its monochrome aesthetic adding an air of nostalgia to this historical moment frozen in time; this print evokes emotions of admiration for those who served their country dutifully while showcasing British military prowess during an era long gone but not forgotten.
