The Liberators of Sicily - from a sketch by our special artist, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Liberators of Sicily - from a sketch by our special artist, 1860. Italian revolutionaries, ...in their rough-and-ready uniforms...A cacciatore of the Alps, Garibaldi's guide, Col. Turr, cavalry soldier, General Garibaldi, Tuscan volunteer, Col. Bixio, Lombardian volunteer, Col. Carini, one of the squadri...The antecedents of Garibaldi are too well known to require being particularised here...Bixio was originally a sailor, like his great commander; but when the cry to arms resounded through Italy in 1848 he hastened to join Garibaldi at Rome, and has ever since linked himself with the fortunes of his great leader. Carini, who is a Sicilian by birth, distinguished himself greatly in the last Sicilian revolution. He is one of the bravest of the brave; and, after an exile of twelve years, he has returned to his country to shed his blood in its behalf. He was wounded by some Bavarian troops in the Fierraa Vecchia, an hour after the armistice had been signed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch, titled 'The Liberators of Sicily,' was created by an unknown Italian artist for the Illustrated London News in 1860. The image depicts a group of Italian revolutionaries, each with unique characteristics and distinct uniforms, gathered together in a moment of camaraderie and determination. At the center stands General Garibaldi, the legendary figure of the Italian unification movement, dressed in his signature red shirt and wide-brimmed hat. To his left is Col. Turr, a cacciatore of the Alps and Garibaldi's guide, wearing a fur-trimmed jacket and carrying a rifle. Nearby, a cavalry soldier stands tall and ready, while Col. Bixio, a Tuscan volunteer, is shown with a bandaged head, a testament to the battles he had fought. Bixio, originally a sailor, joined Garibaldi during the Roman revolution in 1848 and remained a loyal follower. Next to him is Col. Carini, a Sicilian volunteer, born in the land they were fighting to free. Carini's bravery was legendary, and he had distinguished himself greatly during the last Sicilian revolution. Wounded by Bavarian troops in the Fierraa Vecchia, an hour after the armistice had been signed, Carini's dedication to his country was unwavering. The antecedents of Garibaldi are too well-known to be retold here, but the stories of these brave men, united in their quest for Italian independence, continue to inspire and captivate us today. This powerful image serves as a testament to their courage and the indomitable spirit of the Italian people.
