EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white print captures the moment as Lieutenant Verney Lovett Cameron, a brave and clever young naval officer, stands amongst his African followers in 1876. Dressed in his traveling attire, with some of his native African attendants in various stages of undress, the image exudes a sense of adventure and exploration. At the time of this photograph, Cameron was in Loanda, intending to leave for Madeira at the end of January, but the latest telegraphic news had not yet reported his arrival. Cameron, a British subject, had made significant strides in exploring the interior of Africa within the last two years. His accomplishments were highly regarded in the imperialist circles of Britain, with Sir Henry Rawlinson, the President of the Royal Geographical Society, expressing the likelihood of Cameron's imminent arrival in England during a meeting. The group portrait showcases the diverse mix of people that made up Cameron's entourage. Some of his African guides are barefoot, wearing turbans or headdresses, while others carry weapons or flags. Cameron, with his beard and European attire, stands out as the foreigner amidst his followers. The image offers a glimpse into the complexities of imperialism and the relationships that developed between European explorers and the people they encountered in Africa during the 19th century. This print, created by W.J.P, is a testament to the rich history of exploration and the connections forged between people of different backgrounds during a time when the world was being mapped and claimed by European powers.
