In this striking photograph, Lieutenant Cameron stands proudly before an attentive audience at the Royal Geographical Society's annual meeting in St. James's Hall, London, in 1876. The esteemed explorer and naval officer delivered a captivating lecture to the assembled members and their guests, presided over by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. Lieutenant Cameron's journey across Africa from Zanzibar to Benguela and his survey of the southern half of Lake Tanganyika had earned him the prestigious Founder's Medal for the year. This award, presented for the encouragement of geographical science and discovery, is visible in the Duke's hand as he bestows it upon the bearded explorer. The Union Jack, symbol of the British Empire, flies proudly behind the speaker, emphasizing the significance of Britain's role in geographical exploration during this era. The Old Boys Network, or the camaraderie among British men of similar backgrounds and experiences, was in full force as the audience listened intently to Cameron's meticulously detailed account of his travels. The photograph, taken by C.R., captures the essence of a bygone era, filled with the spirit of adventure, the pursuit of knowledge, and the pride of the British Empire.
