EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, Baron Rothschild, a prominent British banker and philanthropist from the late 19th century. Born in 1808 as the eldest son of Nathan Meyer Rothschild, Lionel took over the family's banking house in England in 1836. However, despite his success and contributions to society, he faced discrimination due to his Jewish heritage. In 1847, Lionel was elected as Member for the City of London but was denied taking his seat because he could not take the oath as a Jew. Undeterred by this setback, he persisted and was repeatedly re-elected until finally being allowed to sit in Parliament in 1858. This portrait captures him during this significant period of triumph against anti-Semitism. The lithograph highlights Lionel's distinguished appearance with his well-groomed whiskers and Victorian attire. It serves as a powerful reminder of both his personal achievements and the challenges faced by individuals of Jewish faith during that time. Published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin around 1880 and preserved at The National Portrait Gallery, this image offers a glimpse into history while shedding light on themes such as finance, politics, religion, occupation prejudice, and philanthropy. As an important figure who defied societal barriers through perseverance and determination, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild continues to inspire generations today.
